What is a space heater and how does it work?

An electric space heater is a portable heating device that is designed to focus heat in a small, designated space. Space heaters work by expelling warm air through a fan, warm air naturally rises and forces colder air towards the floor. The function of a space heater is to effectively circulate heat and warm the room; however, they should not be used as an alternative to a regular heating system. Space heaters are a temporary solution for extra warmth.

Are electric space heaters safe?

Typically, space heaters are safe to sue. However, according to the National Fire Protection Agency around 13,000 house fires occur a year due to heating equipment such as space heaters. There are also other forms of space heaters other than just the electric heater. Gas space heaters are a common type of heater, and when used correctly are safe as well. Gas heaters do give off low levels of carbon monoxide, as well as considering the dangers of an open flame.

An electric space heater poses a considerably reduced threat. Electric heaters are not eliminated from risk entirely. Following a few safety guidelines should reduce your risk of a disaster:

  • When shopping for a space heater, always pick one with a tip-over cut-off switch

Often space heaters are placed on the floor and the last thing you want is for it to tip over and start a fire within your home.

  • ALWAYS plug your space heater directly into the wall socket.

If plugging into a socket isn’t a feasible option, when using an extension cord make sure that the wiring is a minimum of 14 gauges.
